Top Of The Pops - Little Mix vs. NME - Jake Bugg

Top Of The Pops - Little Mix vs. NME - Jake Bugg
We think magazines are popular because...
  • · Articles with Musicians
Firstly, I'd like to begin with stating that I personally agree with this statement as I believe "Articles with Musicians" are a great way to enhance the popularity of the music press as well as keeping the tradition of magazines popular compared to the up and coming blogs. By using the two magazines Top Of The Pops issue December 2012 having an article based on little mix and NME having an article based on Jake Bugg, November 2012 the two magazines highlight the contrast in how the music press portray different genres through different magazines, being serious and based on their music career for one and question, answer about the teenage girls personal lives allowing the readers to get to know the band a lot better.

Top Of The Pops has a primary audience of 85% females being mainly teenage girls, therefore the articles that shall be portrayed within the editions are teenage boy bands for the girls to have 'crushes' on and admire as well as the female groups to be icons and allows the reader to look up to these types of girls and aspire to be them. NME is a magazine that is based on the genre of rock and indie this aiming for the target market of mainly males being 66% that are the young adults. This is because the idiolect can be specified for the genre using expletives and complex words that the older generation or more informed audiences will understand which one of the uses and gratification theory points. This portraying that the articles have a major part of the magazine popularity.

The magazine article for Jake Bugg is more to the older more niche audience due to the subtle intertexual pieces of information that is dropped within the magazine, this makes the readers feel they belong and having a sense of ‘cleverness’ due to the fact that the information is based on this type of genre or music artist. An example of this within the article would be the heading of the article being lyrics of a song from Bob Dylan. This linking the artists due to the fact that the article is based on to the old well known musician of this genre giving the artists a great reputation. Furthermore the article is in depth and informative about the artist being about him and his music rather than the gossip which is more seen within the magazine of Top Of The Pops.

In contrast I believe this argument can be easily disagreed with due to the fact that now days not matter what genre most people are able to get the information they need straight away of social networks such as facebook and twitter and other blogging websites. This is because using the uses and gratifications theory many people like to be well informed about artists therefore the faster the better. Magazines are typically released weekly or monthly therefore the internet is a fast and can be seen as more informative way of giving people information due to the fast updates and easier way for people to express ones opinion. In addition a second theory being the higher rakey of needs indicates that the music press and its articles are closer to the top being part of a pleasure rather than necessities we need to survive. This meaning that even though many people do not need magazines they believe they need them to help one understand who they are as well as they things they will like and dislike building up a personal demographic of one’s self, being what the music press use (demographics) to allow them to create the profiles of their target audience of the magazine.

Why People Buy Music Magazines... (MOCK EXAM QUESTION ONE HELP)

There are numerous different types of music magazines for all different genres from rock and heavy metal to R&B and pop. These magazines get published monthly or even weekly to feed music lovers of all ages with the information they want about bands, songs and music events such as festivals.
There are many reasons why readers buy a music magazine instead of using the websites or apps that are provided and the simple reason for this is that they are able to sit down, flick through the pages and finish within a time limit getting all the relevant pieces of information. The more popular magazines that are sold are the rock and heavy metal magazines instead of the mainstream dance, pop music magazines. The reason for this is because each reader has a preference of how they wish to receive their information and that different people have specific needs that they want to be met.
In my opinion I believe that the paper copies of magazines are a lot more enjoyable and easy to read as well as having the freebie that every reader enjoys every so often. In addition the paper copies that are sold nowadays are usually subscribed or being monthly issuers due to the fact that the Internet holds most information sooner therefore not having the up to date, current gossip on the music industry.

Using the uses and gratifications theory many people will buy a music magazine because it can help them relate to the bands and other people's lives mentioned with in the articles inclosed as well as using it as a topic of conversation suing so local occasions, meaning becoming friends with others that have similar interests. Furthermore it can be cheaper to subscribe and they believe they are able to get value for money.

Furthermore the publishing companies that create the magazines should be loosing out on profit due to the fact that not all people have Internet Rex therefore try use many ways of communication to sell the music magazines.
In my opinion I feel that the Internet is useful for music website yet the hard copies can be beneficial to have a copy of and be able to keep it especially if one is a collector. the music industry is extremely competitive and therefore new, up and coming bands use the magazines to help with promotion which means that the proper copies are important incase a huge headline becomes front page.

The typical people to buy paper magazines nowadays are people that are really into music; like typical teenagers and fashion. The music magazines are for those who are serious about the music genre and serious about music in general welch ether it's because they are expressing their emotions or trying to convey a message to their fans.

The articles that are in magazines depends on the genre being pop the articles will be based on gossip or red carpet events compared to indie which will be based on the latest festival that has been held. He colours schemes for each magazine is different as it helps convey the message as well as the genre attracting the right audience. The typical person to by music magazines are older males or young girls for the pop magazines.

In my opinion I feel that the Internet is extremely useful when having apps and other websites to convey information about he music industry yet the paper copy is good and handy to buy which can be finished and read within a time slot compared to the Internet that can be read or hours alone.
