Top Of The Pops - Little Mix vs. NME - Jake Bugg
We think magazines are popular because...
- · Articles with Musicians
Firstly,
I'd like to begin with stating that I personally agree with this statement as I
believe "Articles with Musicians" are a great way to enhance the
popularity of the music press as well as keeping the tradition of magazines
popular compared to the up and coming blogs. By using the two magazines Top Of The Pops issue December
2012 having an article based on little mix and NME having an article based on Jake Bugg,
November 2012 the two magazines highlight the contrast in how the music
press portray different genres through different magazines, being serious and
based on their music career for one and question, answer about the teenage
girls personal lives allowing the readers to get to know the band a lot better.
Top Of
The Pops has a primary audience of 85%
females being mainly teenage girls, therefore the articles that shall be
portrayed within the editions are teenage boy bands for the girls to have
'crushes' on and admire as well as the female groups to be icons and allows the
reader to look up to these types of girls and aspire to be them. NME is a magazine
that is based on the genre of rock and indie this aiming for the target market
of mainly males being 66% that are
the young adults. This is because the idiolect
can be specified for the genre using expletives
and complex words that the older
generation or more informed audiences will understand which one of the uses and gratification theory
points. This portraying that the articles have a major part of the magazine
popularity.
The
magazine article for Jake Bugg is more to the older more niche audience due to the subtle intertexual pieces of information that is dropped within the
magazine, this makes the readers feel they belong and having a sense of ‘cleverness’
due to the fact that the information is based on this type of genre or music
artist. An example of this within the article would be the heading of the
article being lyrics of a song from Bob Dylan. This linking the artists due to
the fact that the article is based on to the old well known musician of this
genre giving the artists a great reputation. Furthermore the article is in
depth and informative about the artist being about him and his music rather
than the gossip which is more seen within the magazine of Top Of The Pops.
In contrast I believe this
argument can be easily disagreed with due to the fact that now days not
matter what genre most people are able to get the information they
need straight away of social networks such as facebook and twitter
and other blogging websites. This is because using the uses and gratifications theory many people like to be well
informed about artists therefore the faster the better. Magazines are typically
released weekly or monthly therefore the internet is a fast and can
be seen as more informative way of giving people information due to the
fast updates and easier way for people to express ones opinion. In addition a second
theory being the higher rakey of needs
indicates that the music press and its articles are closer to the top being
part of a pleasure rather than necessities we need to survive. This meaning
that even though many people do not need magazines they believe they need them
to help one understand who they are as well as they things they will like and
dislike building up a personal demographic of one’s self, being what the music
press use (demographics) to allow
them to create the profiles of their target audience of the magazine.
